Preparing Sweet Potatoes

There are many ways that sweet potatoes can be cooked. They can complement most dishes like soups, salads and stews, and can make meat dishes like lamb, beef, turkey or chicken taste great. Fish tastes good with sweet potatoes too, and so do pies, cakes custards and breads.

That is not all. Raw sweet potatoes make an excellent great snack that go very well with all kinds of dips. The natural sweet flavor present in sweet potatoes can greatly enhance the taste of seasonings and accompaniments like ginger, dark sugars, sweet spices, rum, orange juice or zest, raisins, currants, pecans and syrups.

If you want to enjoy baked sweet potatoes, you must first prick the skin with a fork, and then bake for forty to fifty minutes, at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Boiled or mashed sweet potatoes can either be added to various dishes, or had with some butter and salt. Boiling is easy and should take about thirty-five to forty-five minutes, and then you can have them mashed by putting them through an electric mixer or by using a potato masher.

If you are planning to serve them raw, first wash and peel the sweet potatoes. Cut them up into whatever shape you fancy, and then place the pieces on ice water for around 10 minutes. Some popular dips that go with raw sweet potatoes are ranch, salsa or applesauce.

Sweet potatoes are also very tasty when served as toasted chips. You need to make 1/4 inch thick slices, rub each slice with olive oil, salt and pepper, and then bake for about 15 minutes on each side in an oven that has been preheated at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
