How To Plant Sweet Potatoes ?

Sweet potato, or ipomoea batata as it is scientifically called, is a big, starchy root vegetable that comes with a sweet taste and loads of nutrients. Even though sweet potatoes have nothing to do with yams, a number of people all over the United States refer to these as yams. Sweet potato is a root crop and you can find a number of states in this country where these are harvested.

There are two ways to plant sweet potatoes; some people plant the root crop directly, while others prefer using just one stem that has been cut from the plant. A number of sweet potato planters choose to go with the second method, since it is believe to produce as least 20 percent more that the first planting method. It is also said that cutting the stem from a sweet potato plant and using it for harvesting can also make the plant grow quicker as well as healthier, especially if the varieties being grown are the Mariella or the Ackersegen.

If you would like to know how to go about using the stem to plant sweet potatoes, here is how: first, select plants that are 2 to 3 months old and take out the stems, water them and then keep them covered under a sheet of plastic for two whole days. When the stems are ready to be planted, you will see roots coming out of them. Next, take a banana pot and plant the stems, along with animal manure and soil. These should be ready for transplantation after 7 to 8 days.
