Difference Between Yams Sweet Potatoes

If you too, like most people, are under the misconception that sweet potatoes and yams are the same, you should know that in reality they are not. Read on to know how you can differentiate between these two. Many people in the US think that they are referring to the same vegetable when they say 'yams' and 'sweet potatoes', but actually they are talking about two vegetables that are quite different from one another.

The yam originally came from Africa and Asia. It has a thick skin, and the flesh inside can be orange, white or purple in color. One of the primary food crops in the tropical as well as subtropical countries, yams are baked, boiled, steamed or fried. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, come in two main kinds and are what is mostly eaten in the United States. One kind of sweet potatoes has dry. Yellow colored flesh inside and a tan skin outside, while the other kind has a darker skin and an orange flesh. It is the second kind that most people often confuse with yam.

Both yams and sweet potatoes are rich in fiber and potassium, and both are considered good choices when it comes to healthy food habits. So how would you know which one is yam and which one is sweet potato? Look at the shape of the vegetable. A sweet potato is smaller and has a smoother surface, while a yam will be longish, with a rough skin that will make you think of the bark of a tree.
