Spinach is a great green leafy vegetable, which has a lot of nutrients. It is also tasty to eat if cooked the right way. Spinach has a lot of iron and calcium along with other vitamins like A and C. It has B-complex vitamins like thiamin, potassium and folic acid. Spinach also can add a lot of color to the dishes. It can be made crisp or creamy depending on the taste requirements. |
Spinach can be easily grown at home with a little bit of care. It grows throughout the year. Spinach needs a shady, but yet a sunny spot to grow. The more the sunlight, the bigger the leaves get. Typically it takes around four to six weeks to harvest spinach after it is planted. You can get spinach seeds from a gardening store or a local store like Wal-Mart that sells seeds.
Prepare the soil with vermin compost or plain compost and add some natural manure to it. Next, make holes at least 5 inches apart from each other. Put around 2 to 5 seeds in each hole and cover it up with soil. Each hole should be at least two inches in depth. Also, make sure you do not put the seeds too deep inside as they will find it difficult to germinate and reach out to the sunlight. It takes about 4 to 5 days for spinach to germinate.
There are several kinds of spinach. Some are light in color and others have crinkled leaves. Choose your variety as they all grow the same way. Spinach can grow up to 2 feet tall.
