Types Of Potatoes


There are many different types of potatoes, and each type can be used in many different ways. The russet, for example, tastes good when baked. The Yukon Gold is good for mashing, steaming, boiling, baking, and roasting. They are considered to be all purpose potatoes. Get them if you are not sure how you are going to use your potatoes.

Red potatoes such as Norland and the Klondike Rose are ideal for steaming, boiling, roasting, au gratin, and scalloped. White potatoes such as the White Rose are great for mashing, boiling, steaming, au gratin, and roasting. Fingerling potatoes are simply great for baking, boiling, and roasting. Then there are the blue potatoes such as the Russian Blue which taste marvelous steamed, baked, or boiled.

As is clear most varieties of potatoes can be baked or mashed. In all, there are around 575 types of potatoes. These are then classified into the six types described above. Potatoes are grown all over the world and are a major food source for many people. Each culture cooks potatoes in its own way and they are eaten by most people in the world. Only a very few communities avoid eating potatoes for religious reasons.

Cook potatoes in any way you like and enjoy its wholesome goodness. Potatoes are a good source of getting your daily carbohydrates requirement. These are needed for the body to function optimally. The common russet type of potato is grown in Idaho, and so it is called the Idaho potato in most stores in the United States. Enjoy it baked or mashed according to your taste.
