What Is Holy Basil ?
Holy basil is a very popular herb in India, and is prevalent by the name of Tulsi. It is considered to be a holy plant and the Hindu religion even worships it. Holy basil is also found in Malaysia, Central America, South America and other tropical countries. In ancient medicine, it has been used widely for treating several diseases, including lowering cholesterol, fighting respiratory infections and curing digestive problems. |
The medicinal uses of the herb have even effective in removing kidney stones. Medical sciences like ayurvedic use holy basil in several medicines.
In other countries like Malaysia and Thailand, holy basil is used to garnish food. Different people have different uses of the plant. In India, people worship the plant and also use the leaves to cure ailments like common cold and cough. It is very common to find Indians using the leaves of holy basil along with lime and honey to cure a sore throat. However, to cure specific ailments one should always consult an ayurvedic doctor for appropriate prescription.
Holy basil belongs to the mint family of herbs. It is also called the queen of the herbs for the number of curative properties it has. Though the usage and medicinal properties of the plant seem too exaggerated, the chemical properties of the plant indicate several uses. For example, the Vitamin C content in it is very beneficial for the skin, and has anti oxidant properties. It can also stop the free radicals from proliferating, and therefore, helps in preventing cancer.
The holy basil acts at two levels in the human body. One, is it plays a role in preventing various diseases and another is curing infections and diseases.
