Growing Holy Basil
Holy basil is very easy to grow at home. It is also called Tulsi in Sanskrit. It is one of the most common plants to be found in India. However, holy basil needs ample sunlight to grow healthily. It also needs to be watered everyday or else it will wither away. The holy basil has purple flowers and soft green leaves. |
You can sow the holy basil seeds when it is moderately hot. Sow the seeds one inch deep into the soil. If you are growing more than one plant, then sow the seeds 5 inches apart. The plant can grow up to one meter in height and depending on the size of the container, it can grow about 3 feet wide. It does not propagate very easily.
While planting the seed, put a thin layer of compost on top. It takes about one week for the seeds to germinate. Once the plant comes out and grows up to one inch in height, you can consider transferring it onto a bed in your garden. If you wish that it should remain in the pot, you can do so.
Choose the sunniest spot to put the plant in. Occasionally, you can feed the plant fertilizers. Also, make sure that the plant is well watered. You should allow the plant to soak up the water and the soil should not be soggy with water.
Holy basil is an extremely vulnerable plant, and it can actually wilt overnight. Usually the causes for this sudden wilting can be a disease or pests. Remove the wilted and dry leaves, and try spraying an insecticide.
