The holy basil is one herb that has been found to cure several small ailments, including the common cold and cough. Scientifically it has been proven that the plant has several curative properties. The goodness of basil helps in treating conditions like asthma, bronchitis, arthritis, diabetes, cold, fever, ulcers and rheumatoid illnesses. It also treats several other kinds of pain, earaches, epilepsy, heart diseases, malaria, sinusitis, snake bite, stomach ache and vomiting.

It also works as an anti worm medicine, and stimulates lactation in nursing mothers and also prevents hair loss. Undoubtedly a single plant renders to keeping the whole human body system in good health.

However, this much amount of goodness does not come without its side effects. They are not serious in nature, and should be treated as cautionary. People who use drugs like acetaminophen or paracetamol should not take basil on the same day. Also, for children, it should be administered under medical supervision. Chewing of basil leaves although has no side effects. One can even consume a couple of leaves everyday to keep the body in general good health.

There are three types of basil plants that are common. One type of basil is used for cooking, the other basil has dark greenish black colored leaves and the holy basil has green leaves with a strong smell. Holy basil is easy to identify, and this variety has several medicinal properties.

Some of the common ways that people use to have basil is through decoction, in tea, leaves, chewing the seeds and also taking the leaves along with honey and lemon.
