Type Of Gourds
Gourd is a name given to any kind of fruit that has a hollow shell. It belongs to the family of Cucurbitaceae and the genus is Lagenaria. Gourds have mostly been from the species of Lagenaria siceraria and belong to their native Africa. Some say that these gourds could be the oldest of plants that were domesticated by human beings. |
Gourds are used for a number of items, even as bottles or bowls. Even musical instruments like berimbau and other instruments like drums and stringed instruments are made from gourds.
There are many types of gourds that are cultivated. Each has its own individual purpose. Jack-o-Lanterns are made from gourds which are most popular during Halloween. Some of the different types of gourds are as follows:

The Kora, which is a musical instrument made from a huge calabash that is cut into half and covered with the skin from a cow and the sounds that comes from this instrument is quite similar to a harp.
The Berimbau is a percussion-like instrument that has a single string. It is shaped like a bow. This musical instrument is quite popular in places like Brazil.
The Guiro is Cuban percussion instrument made from a hollow gourd. It is also known as calabazo, ralladera rascador, or guayo; and people in Brazil call it as reco-reco.
There are other different musical instruments made from gourds, such as Koteka, Maraca, Sitar, Mate and Hulusi. White gourd juice is quite famous in China. The juice has a smoky taste.
