How To Grow Gourds ?

Gourds can be used for a variety of purposes. Besides using edible gourds as food, you can use the ornamental varieties for decoration or building items like birdhouses or bowls. You can also use gourds to make musical instruments or for sculpturing.

Here is a look at some simple steps that will explain How To Grow Gourds ?:

  • Select a site that can receive sunshine and which has soil that is moderately fertile. This is important so that you can ensure proper growth for your gourds.
  • Time of year that is conducive to growing gourd is mid spring. Before you sow the seeds, ensure that there is a lot of organic matter put into the soil. This makes the soil fertile enough for plant growth
  • Before planting the seeds, make sure to harden them. Plant them around five and half feet apart in individual squares or rows.
  • Have a trellis erected on the soil, so that the plants clamber over them. The trellis will ensure air circulation and will prevent the gourd from becoming flat. It will also provide more space in your garden for growing.
  • Gourds need to be watered every week. It is important to add compost to the soil during the growing stage. Let the gourds ripen on the vine till their stem turn brown.
