How To Dry Gourds ?


Gourds can be used in a variety of ways. You can make use of dried gourds to decorate your table. You can also use them to make object like birdhouses, bowls, dippers and much more.

Here is a look at what you need to do to dry gourds:

  • The first step is to harvest your ripe gourds. This should be done just at the end of the growing season, just after the stem of the gourd has turned brown.
  • It is important to ensure that a small part of the stem is attached to the gourd during the harvesting process.
  • Take out any excess oil on the gourd surface so that you have a clean surface.
  • Now you have to take steps to dry the gourd. Tie a string on the stem of the gourd and hang it. Make sure that the place from where the gourd is hung is well-ventilated.

Gourd should be hung in this room till the time that it becomes completely dry. Well dried gourd will have a hollow sound and only then is it ready to use. As you see the gourd dry, mold can form on the surface. This can be cleaned with bleach solution. It is important to be gentle when handling the gourd, as they are quite fragile and tend to get soft spots. When you know that the gourd is completely dry, you can hear seeds inside the gourd. A completely dry gourd is weather resistant and durable.
