How To Preserve Peas For Next Year Garden ?
You can preserve peas for either eating them throughout the year or for the next year's garden. You can preserve the seeds from your own harvest for the following year, and this is quite possible. Also, if the peas you grew were tasty, then you should preserve them. You can also cut costs on investing for a whole new set of seeds each year. It is a simple process, and anyone could do it without much effort. |
In order to preserve the seeds, let the peas dry on the vine itself. While picking the peas, leave some on the vine so that they can ripen and then dry out. Keep a close watch for birds and other insects trying to attack them. If needed, use some pest control.
Once the outer covering of the peas is dry, pluck them. Then shuck and dry the peas for few more days. When the peas are completely dry, you can tell the good peas from the bad ones. The best looking peas are always good, and these are the ones you should keep for the following year’s crop.
Peas are always planted in two sets. One set in spring, and the other set in fall. So, divide the seeds in such a way that you have some for both the seasons. Put the dried peas in a zip lock bag. While storing, makes sure that all the air from the bags is removed, and label each bag with date when you put them in. Also, name the seeds as peas. Put the zip lock bag in the freezer and leave it there for the following year.
