How To Freeze Garden Peas ?
Peas are nice vegetables to have throughout the year. However, storing them can be a pain if you do not know how to. By freezing peas in the right way, you can preserve them for a long period of time. So, here is how to freeze garden peas. |
Before you start the process, have a few things ready like zip lock packets, one large pot of boiling water and 2 large bowls, one filled with ice and the other filled with cold water. You will also need to keep some tools handy like a knife.
The whole idea of storing peas is so that you can use them when you want, and also have them crisp enough to use. So, when you are selecting the peas to be frozen, make sure you choose something that is tender and crisp. Peas are best when they are young, but fully swollen. They will be light green in color. So, the best time to freeze peas is also soon after the harvest. While freezing, avoid peas that look dark green, old or have wrinkled exteriors.
Once you have the peas, wash them thoroughly and blanch the peas in the bowl of hot boiling water. Then cool them immediately in ice water. Drain them thoroughly and put them in the zip lock. Immediately transfer the zip lock packets to the freezer. The peas that are stored this way can stay fresh for around 9 months to 12 months. However, do not take them out of the freezer frequently. If possible, store them in portions and use each portion as and when needed.
