Growing Garden Peas

There are several types of garden pea plants. Originally peas were cooked with the tender tops, but now the peas are removed from their shells and used. Some of the varieties of peas you get are shelled peas, snow peas, sugar pod peas and snap peas. Peas need rather cool weather to grow, and if the weather is conducive for growth, peas can grow throughout the year. There is no specific season for harvest. That is one of the reasons why peas are available right round the year.

The pea plant does not grow very tall, and even a full grown plant is somewhat dwarf-like in appearance. If you have ideal weather conditions with moderate temperature, then you should attempt to grow peas.

In order to grow the peas, you need to prepare the bed with manure and compost. After which you should also check the spoil for pH level. Any local gardening store will help you test the levels for as little as $10. You can even buy a home pH level checking kit. It is a lot easier to do this. For two weeks, just prepare the bed and make sure the soil has absorbed enough calcium and moisture.

When you sow the peas, make sure you leave a gap of one inch between each plant. Have a nice shape for your patch as the flowers on the peas are quite attractive and they can be included as a part of the flower garden.

You need to harvest the peas after they have bulged in the pods. They will show because the pods will look filled out. You can also squeeze the pods gently and see whether the peas are perfect for plucking.
