Growing Cucumbers In Pots
If you live in an apartment, you will not have the luxury of having a vegetable garden. However, you should not despair as there are certain vegetables that can be grown in pots. Here is how you can go about growing cucumbers in pots.
The first thing to do is to select the pots. The ideal pot should be around 12 inches to 20 inches in diameter. In addition, it should be made from plastic as this will help the soil to retain water and never dry out. Since cucumber is a climbing plant, you will need to erect a trellis behind the pots to help the vines grow. However, before selecting a permanent place for the pots, check the temperature of the area. The temperature should be around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, the plants need around 6 hours of sunlight each day.
Buy good quality cucumber seeds and plant them into the pots by making a half an inch deep hole. Drop a few seeds in each hole. In a week's time the seeds will germinate. Select only the strongest looking seedling in each pot. Cut away the remaining of the germinated seedlings in the pot. Do not attempt to pull out the unwanted seedlings as this could damage the root of the seedling you want to keep.
Now just make sure that you water the plant as well as give it fertilizer. Consult your local gardening store to pick up a good fertilizer. Soon the cucumber plants in the pots will start producing the fruit, and you can pluck them while they are tender. If you allow the fruit to remain on the plant for too long, it will turn bitter. Also, plucking the fruit early will facilitate the plant to produce more fruits.
