Cucumber Nutritional Value


Cucumber is a fruit which belongs to the gourd family just like the pumpkin, squash and zucchini. It belongs to the same genus as muskmelon. However, owing to the uses of cucumber, it is often labeled as a vegetable rather than a fruit.

While cucumber has high water content, it also has certain other nutritional value that makes it worthwhile to eat it. For instance, cucumber is a rich source of vitamin C and fiber. It is also considered to be a good for people who are dieting as it has low calorie content.

If you eat 100 grams of raw cucumber, you will be getting 3.63 grams of carbohydrates, 1.67 grams of sugar, 0.5 grams of dietary fiber, 0.11 grams of fat, 0.65 grams of protein, 0.026 mg of thiamine or Vitamin B1, 0.033 mg of riboflavin or Vitamin B2, 0.098 mg of niacin or Vitamin B3, 0.259 mg of pantothenic acid or Vitamin B5, 0.040 mg of Vitamin B6, 7 mcg of folate or Vitamin B9, 2.8 mg of Vitamin C,  16 mg of calcium, 0.28 mg of iron, 13 mg of magnesium, 24 mg of phosphorus, 147 mg of potassium and 0.20 mg of zinc.

Because of cucumber's nutritional value, it can be consumed on a daily basis without suffering from any ill-effects. In addition, it also helps to ease heartburn, acidity, gastritis and ulcer when consumed as a juice. The juice is also good for people suffering from gout, arthritis and eczema. Cucumber contains an enzyme called erepsin, which helps in the digestion of protein. The potassium content in cucumber makes it an ideal vegetable for those who are suffering either from high blood pressure or low blood pressure.
