Cucumber Diseases

If you intent growing cucumber in your vegetable garden, you should be aware of the various cucumber diseases that can affect your vegetable. Cucumber is quite susceptible to a disease known as anthracnose. You can identify this cucumber disease by the reddish brow marks or black marks on the fruit or the plant. It usually occurs during warm and wet weather conditions.

Another disease that affects cucumber is downy mildew. Here on the upper surface of the older leaves you will be able to see dark or yellow patches. The lower surface of the leaves will have dark or white cotton-looking mold. Another mildew that can affect your cucumber is known as powdery mildew. Here the upper surface of the leaves along with the young stems and fruits of the plant will have a white or brown powdery type of mildew. This fungal disease in cucumber causes premature ripening of the fruit and after this the plant will turn yellow and wither away.

Early blight and late blight can also affect your cucumber plant. Early blight appears in the form of brown or black spots, while late blight is in the form of greenish black spots. Cucumber mosaic virus can also affect the plant causing a mosaic appearance of the leaves and fruit. In addition, this virus will cause stunted growth of the plant, the leaves will get shriveled up, and the fruit will grow in a weird shape.

You can prevent many cucumber diseases by ensuring that you use high quality seeds, resort to crop rotation and adopt organic chemical controlling measures. Also, check the plants regularly so that you can remove the diseased plant early to avoid the spread of disease to the healthy plants.
