How To Grow Cauliflower ?
Cauliflower is grown for its central white head, and can be grown all year round as long as the correct variety for the time of year is chosen. Cauliflowers require large space to grow. So, you should only think about planting cauliflower if you have sufficient space and are not looking for too much yield from each square foot of your vegetable garden. |
Though cauliflower belongs to the same family as cabbage, it is a vegetable that requires more attention and care than cabbage. It is only then that it will grow successfully. So your first priority when you first learn how to grow cauliflower is to make sure you give it a very rich and deep soil during the growing season; with no check in the cauliflower's growth.
Plant the seeds in seedling pots. Just make a 1/2 deep hole in the pot and drop a few seeds. Once the seeds germinate and grow into seedlings, transfer to a sunny spot where the temperature should be maintained at 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Now wait for 6 weeks and then transplant the seedlings to your vegetable garden.
Make sure when you are transplanting the seedlings, you plant each at least 60 centimeters from the next. If you intend planting them in rows, then each row should be 100 centimeters away from the next row.
Promising growth requires regular and continuous growing conditions. Any stress to the plant will result in a reduction in head growth. This small head growth is referred to as buttoning. It is important that you never allow the soil to become dry as it will result in small heads. Harvesting of the cauliflower is dependent on the variety you have planted. However, as a rule, you should start harvesting before the head reaches it full size. This way you will be able to get multiple crops at different periods.
Unlike broccoli, cauliflower plant does not grow new heads. So, once you finish harvesting, you can add the rest of plant into your compost heap.
