When To Plant Cabbage ?

Cabbage is a cold season plant that is harvested in early summer or late fall. You have to plant it accordingly. For the vegetable to be harvested in the summer, plant it towards the middle of January. To harvest cabbage in fall, plant it in the heat of summer. When planting in summer, make sure that you give the plant ample water so that it can endure the heat.

For plants that are planted in January, ensure that the ground is not too wet or covered with frost though. In general, January is a good time to prepare the garden for its first crop.

Weed the garden thoroughly and add fertilizer as well. Now plant the cabbage seedlings 12 to 24 inches apart depending on the variety and the size of the head desired. Sow cabbage seeds a quarter to half inch in depth. Once the seedlings grow, transplant them to another row.

Cabbage can be harvested any time after the heads are formed. Do ensure that you do not wait too long or the heads will crack and come apart. The heads should be firm when you are harvesting them.

To get a steady and continuous supply of cabbage, plant both the early and slow growing varieties of cabbage. This way, you will have a regular supply of cabbage almost throughout the year. It is essential to keep the cabbage bed free of weeds. You should also water the beds often enough so that the soil stays moist. Cabbage takes at least 65 days to reach maturity, so plant it accordingly.
