When To Pick Broccoli ?

Broccoli can grow well in sandy to clay loam soils. Growing broccoli is not difficult. Nevertheless, picking or harvesting broccoli is bit tricky. However, there are few signs that you can look for that will let you know when it is the right time to pick broccoli.

The initial sign that you need to look out for is the size of the head. The size should be around 3 to 6 inches. In addition, the broccoli head should hard and firm. Also, take into account the size of the florets. In fact, many vegetable gardeners believe that the floret size is the real indicator for picking broccoli. When the florets on the outer edge of the head match in size to the head, it is the correct time to pick broccoli.

However, you should also pay attention to the color of the head and individual florets. The head and the florets have to be a deep green in color. If the florets are yellow in color, it means that they are still in the blooming phase. You should only harvest the broccoli when the entire head is a deep and rich green.

Use the sharp knife to pick broccoli. Slash the head of broccoli. Cut the stem 5 inches below the head. Try to avoid cutting the main stem as this can damage the plant and you will not get the second set of heads that will appear in the next few days. After picking the main head of the broccoli, you can still grow smaller heads, which tend to grow at the side of where the main head was present.
