How To Grow Beets ?

Growing beets is moderately easy. In fact, it is not a hassle compared to growing other vegetables. If you are planning to grow beets, makes sure you find a place in your vegetable garden that has ample access to the direct sunlight and has light soil.

To plant beets, you will need to dig a hole to about 10 inches in depth, and remember to fertilize the soil well with organic matter and compost. It is preferable that you plant the seeds two or three weeks before the last of the expected frost. Like most other plants, it is hard to find beets as started plants in nurseries. So, you will have to grow your beets from seeds.

Space the seeds an inch and a half apart, and if you are planning on having more than a row, remember to keep a space of 1 foot between the rows.

Once you have seeded the vegetable patch with beet seeds, cover the planted area with floating row covers at once. This will prevent leaf miners and other pests from invading your beets.

Water your plants once a week leaving an inch of water above the soil to prevent cracked roots. After about two weeks, you can add compost to the soil to prevent weeds. When you find that your beets have grown to about 2 inches in height, you would need to trim them down to allow them to grow better.

The growth time of beets lasts anywhere between 50 to 55 days from the day of seeding, and you can harvest them by pulling the beets out with the leaves or dig them out.
