We have been using beans all through our lives to add flavor to our cooking. From soups to salads; to combining them with other delicacies and meats, beans have been an integral part of our kitchen. Have we ever thought about what would be the scientific names for the beans that we use? Here are a few details about the scientific names of beans:


The great common bean is scientifically known as Phaseolus vulgaris and they have sub-classes which are distinguished by the color of the beans. The great common bean comes in color varieties of white, red, black and brown. The black beans, which is a sub-class of the great common bean, is also referred to as frijoles negro. Lima beans' scientific name is Phaseolus limensis, and butter beans' is Phaseolus lunatus. Fava or also called fava beans are scientifically known as Vicia faba major, and runner beans' scientific name is Phaseolus coccineus

Soybeans, which is a part of a nutritious diet, is scientifically known as Glycine max and tepary beans' scientific name is Phaseolus acutifolius, variation latifolius. We also have native beans of China and Japan known as Adzuki or Azuki beans. These beans from Japan and China are scientifically called Phaseolus angularis.

These are the scientific names for some of the most commonly used beans in our day-to-day life. Beans have always been the easiest to grow and require absolutely not much of a fuss. They can be grown in the vegetable garden or backyard without a hassle. Mostly all beans require the same type of soil and weather conditions to grow.
