Where Does Baby Corn Come From ?


Baby corn, also known as candle corn, miniature corn or Chinese corn, is not a separate species of plant. It comes from the same corn that we grow and the one that is used to make pop corn. It is small in size because it is plucked early.

Baby corns are actually the immature ears of the regular corn. It is the same variety as the sweet corn. Usually baby corn is harvested within four days after the buds and the silk emerge from it. Baby corn is used in plenty in Asian cuisines. So, it is grown in plenty there. Countries like India and Thailand harvest and supply it internationally. It is not known to be harvested in the United States.

People usually eat the whole baby corn along with the cob. The cob is very tender and also tasty. You can eat it raw, or pickled or cooked. It is used in several types of meal preparations. People even have baby corn as a part of their main course. It a common feature in soups and salads.

The usage of baby corn is very high in Indian, Thai, Malaysian and Chinese cuisines. However, of late, several Latin American dishes are using baby corn quite a bit. There is a sudden rise in demand for baby corn from this region.

There are several varieties of baby corn and it is usually graded using the size and maturity. An over mature baby corn is not that good. Baby corn that is harvested when it is young is the ideal and best type of corn.
