How Is Baby Corn Grown ?

If you wish to eat tasty home grown corn, then you need to know how to grow and harvest baby corn. You should start the process in summer. Baby corn is very popular in Asian cooking and these days, it is commonly found in salad bars across the United States. Baby corn is also processed and sold in tins or jars.

There are some seed companies that sell high quality baby corn seeds. Try to get one of those to get started. When baby corn grows to full size, they look like small corn fields. You can have these kinds of fields in your house also. You will need to dedicate a small patch of land to growing the corn though.

Sow each seed of corn about four inches apart in a row. Each row should be at least 36 inches apart. Before sowing the seeds, get the pH levels of the soil checked, and prepare the bed. To prepare the bed, you should till the mud and make it airy. Do not sow the seed more than an inch deep.

The real effort comes during the harvest of baby corn. Choosing the exact time to harvest the corn takes time and practice. So, when you start the harvesting process, do not do it all at once. First do a few when you see the ears. Then check them and try to judge on your own if it was the right time. If it is not yet ripe, then give it a couple of days more and then pluck a few more. Make a note of dates when you plucked the ripe corn. When you maintain the timeline, you notice that there is a specific time period for the baby to go from being raw to ripe. The ideal time to pluck the baby corn is when it is young.
