Organic Weed And Grass Killer For Gardening

If you are a gardener, you know what a menace weeds can be. However, the good news is that you no longer have to resort to chemical-laden herbicides to rid the weeds from your garden. Instead you can opt for organic weed and grass killer to get rid of those pesky plants that keep appearing constantly.

Here are some organic weed and grass killers that you can use for gardening:

  • Vinegar is a favorite of people who do organic gardening. However, a point to be noted is that the efficacy of vinegar depends on the type of weed you want to get rid of and the concentration of the acetic acid in the vinegar. Usually household vinegar has 5 percent acetic acid but you can get higher concentrations like 15 percent, 20 percent and even 30 percent. Usually the vinegar burns the leaves of the weeds and you would have to reapply in a couple of weeks when the weeds reappear. Normally vinegar does not affect the roots and that is why repeated applications are always necessary. However, a stronger concentration of vinegar may mean that you may not have to use it that often. All you have to do is spray the vinegar on the foliage.
  • Salt can also work as an organic weed killer. Take table salt and put it at the base of weed near the roots. However, salt should be used with caution as it will also kill other plants surrounding the weed. In addition, it will make the soil useless for a few months as you will not be able to grow anything in the area where you have used salt.
  • Pour boiling water on the weeds and your work is done. This is completely organic but be careful as the boiling water will kill roots of other plants it comes in contact with.
  • Corn meal can be used effectively to kill weeds in the pre-emergent stage. Corn meal has corn gluten which does not allow the weed seeds to sprout. In fact, corn meal is ideal for gardens where you are using saplings and young plants as it also protects the plants from snails and slugs.
