Organic Garden Fertilizers

If you have an organic garden, then you will be on the look out for organic garden fertilizers. Most of the organic fertilizers available in the market are from plant or animal sources. However, you can also get fertilizers that come from mineral sources. The composition of organic garden fertilizers is different, as some of them contain more amounts on just a single nutrient. For instance, an organic fertilizer made from bone meal will have high levels of phosphorus, but it will also contain small amounts of other nutrients.

While organic fertilizers help to provide the plants with all the required nutrients for optimum growth, some of them also help to improve the state of the soil and make it a better environment for beneficial microbes. Usually organic fertilizers release just half of the nutrients in the first season they are introduced into the soil, and then continue to release the nutrients slowly over a certain period of time.

Organic garden fertilizers that come from plant sources are usually low in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. However, the nutrients present in these fertilizers are quickly released into the soil and made available for the plants. Some of these fertilizers also contain small amounts of trace elements and other micro-nutrients that plants require. You can easily get these fertilizers in the form of alfalfa meal, compost, corn gluten meal, seaweed, cottonseed meal or humus in any gardening store or local nursery.

The organic fertilizers that come from animal sources help to make a lot of nitrogen available for the plants. Plants require nitrogen for the growth of their leaves. Some of the organic fertilizers that are animal based include manure, bat guano, seabird guano, blood meal, fish emulsion and bone meal. Make sure you read the instructions correctly on the use of the animal fertilizers as some of them can burn the roots of plants if used in excess.

You can also use organic garden fertilizers made from minerals to enhance the fertility of your garden soil. However, this should be done with a long term view as the results will be apparent only after some months, and in some cases after some years. Usually when you are using organic fertilizers made from minerals, you usually need to use it just once and this should sustain your garden for several years. Some of the mineral organic fertilizers are Epsom salt, greensand, gypsum, limestone, and nitrate of soda from Chile.
