Why Is The Drainage Water From Houseplants Coffee Colored ?

When the excess water drains from the houseplants, it is always brown in colors, similar to coffee. Many people do not observe this and when they happen to see it suddenly, they get worried as to why the drainage water from your houseplants is coffee colored.

In fact, when one sees this drainage water, one may feel that this plant is being fed coffee and not water.

But there may be no particular reason for this brown color drainage water. Sometimes when one uses a lot of fertilizer and it is combined with low humidity weather, it is possible the tips of the leaves would turn brown.  Too much of brown color in the water may indicate excess use of fertilizers and one should try to stop using fertilizer for some time. Also when the plants are potted using mixer that contents high peat this may happen.  That means some of the mucky sedge peat that is there in the pot breaks down fast and results the drainage water being leached out of the container  and this water is dark in color.

Some times just a mere mix of excess soil and water may lead to coffee colored drainage water. Since there is no known reason for the drainage water turning into coffee brown color, you may not know a way of stopping it also. Though what you can do is to reduce the chances of water overflowing from the pots. However, do remember that if the houseplant is allowed to stand in the drainage water, it is bound to get root rot or fungal infection.
