How To Cook Fresh Pumpkin ?

Pumpkins are used in a variety of cuisines the world over. They are available in different sizes. There are nearly fifty different kinds of pumpkins available in the market. They belong to the gourd family and are extremely nutritious. Pumpkin purees are used extensively in numerous recipes. You need not go in for canned readymade pumpkin purees. You can prepare them at home. They smell and taste fresh unlike the canned ones.

Firstly, buy a firm healthy looking pumpkin for this purpose. Cut the pumpkin into two. Gently remove the seeds and other membranous layers sticking on the insides. You can go in for traditional methods of cooking like boiling. You can also use a microwave or oven to get instantly cooked pumpkins. The choice is yours.

Boiling: Here, pour sufficient quantities of water in a pan. Cut the pumpkins into quarters and place them inside. Allow the water to boil. Insert a fork and check out the tenderness. If the pumpkins are ready, the fork will easily seep thought the fleshy layers. You can remove the quarters out and place them aside.

Microwave: Cut the pumpkin into medium sized pieces and place them in a microwave safe dish. Cook for six minutes for each pound of pumpkin or until tender. Stir the pieces and flip them over occasionally to ensure even cooking.

Baking: Cover a cookie sheet with a foil. Place pumpkin halves with the flesh facing downwards. Bake at a temperature of 375 degrees until the flesh is tender and completely cooked.

Remove the pumpkin pieces out. Scoop the fleshy layer with a spoon and separate the rind. Place the fleshy pieces in a food processor or a blender. Blend them thoroughly. You can also mash them evenly. Your pumpkin puree is ready!
