Does Chamomile Tea Have Caffeine ?


Chamomile tea, a close relative of green tea, is known all around the globe for its medicinal properties. This herbal tea or tisane is hundred percent natural and does not contain any caffeine. In fact, chamomile is considered to be one among the safest therapeutic herbs known to humans. The tea has exceptional antispasmodic properties and is generally used as a gentle, soothing relaxant to relieve stress and pain during menstrual cramps. It also possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties.

It has numerous health benefits and a very few side effects. Although it causes sleep, it is caffeine-free and is a good substitute to coffee, which contains high amounts of caffeine. However, in any case, it should not be consumed along with anti-epileptic medicines, opioids, or alcohol. Chamomile tea is also highly effective against digestive tract problems, skin irritations, rashes, sun burns, hemorrhoids, toothache, bronchitis, bladder issues, eye infection and inflammation, gum diseases, ad mouth sores. This tisane is also very useful in regulating menstrual periods and alleviating cold, stress, back pain, rheumatism, and menstrual pain. Interestingly, it is also found to be highly effective against diseases like gangrene, jaundice, and worm infestation.

All forms of real tea typically belong to the same species, botanically named as Camellia sinensis. This species contains very high amounts of caffeine. However, herbal infusions or teas prepared using herbs that do not belong to the family of Camellia sinensis, are free of caffeine. Chamomile tea is one such herbal infusion and hence, does not contain any significant amount of caffeine. The amount of caffeine found in chamomile is negligible and so insignificant that it can be ignored.
