Chamomile Tea Side Effects

Chamomile, member of the Asteraceae family of plants, is known for its medicinal properties. Its flowers have a strong aroma and a very bitter taste. Chamaemelum Nobile (Roman chamomile) and Matricaria recutita (German chamomile) are the only two main kinds of chamomile that are used as herbs for medicinal purposes.

Herbal tea prepared from chamomile is widely used across the world. Generally, chamomile flowers and leaves are nontoxic and chamomile tea side effects are extremely rare. However, these side effects are so serious that they cannot be ignored.

Here are a few common side effects that may surface after consumption of this otherwise beneficial herbal tea:

  • Increased bleeding risk
  • Warfarin therapy effects may get augmented
  • Indigestion of tea may lead to symptoms of severe allergy, sometimes resulting in fatal anaphylactic shocks.
  • The cognitive and sedative effect of the antiepileptic medicines, if taken along with the tea, tend to increase significantly
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Bronchial constriction and skin rashes in those prone to ragweed allergy
  • Conjunctivitis and contact dermatitis if it is used for eyewash or topical applications on skin.
  • If taken along with opioids analgesics, it may result in severe CNS depression.

Although the aforementioned side effects of chamomile tea intake are very rare in occurrence, they might surface if this herbal tea is not taken under proper medical supervision. For instance, for the pregnant women, it is advisable to avoid the essential oil or tincture form of chamomile to prevent any augmentation of the anticoagulant effects. Similarly, patients on analgesics, sedative medicines, aspirin/warfarin dosage or alcohol should never take this tea.
