How To Store Fresh Basil ?


Basil is a delicious herb with strong pungent flavor. It is quite popular among most of the delicate cuisines. Most of us would like to have them readily available in hands while cooking. But sometimes, not getting the fresh ones could be quite disappointing for those who are used to eat the fresh ones. Therefore, it is always advisable to store fresh basil always when you have them in abundance. Storing fresh basil is not at all a cumbersome process and you can do it with very ease.

For those of you, who wish to use fresh basil always, storing them in a refrigerator is not a solution. One way of storing them fresh is to keep them in a glass of water and cover the glass with a plastic bag. Storing this way would keep the leaves fresh for about a week or so. But, if you want to store them in a way, so that it can be used for the whole year, then drying them is the best option. You can dry them either by hanging or by putting them in an oven at a temperature ranging from 85 to 90 degree Fahrenheit. Once the basil leaves are dried properly, these can be further stored in an airtight container.

Freezing basil leaves in one of the good options for keeping it for a longer time. In order to preserve them fresh, put a spoon full of leaves in ice-cube tray and place the tray inside the freezer. Whenever you wish to use basil simply take out the ice cubes and use them. Or else, you may also keep the leaves in a plastic bag that is refrigerator safe. The plastic bag must have a zipper on the top to keep them protected from getting moist.
