How To Grow Sweet Basil ?


Sweet basil is one of those herbs that thrive well in climates that are hot and humid. This plant requires enough sunshine and a good quality soil. In warm climates, sweet basil grows as perennial throughout the year. In the colder regions, it grows annually, and is at its best during the summers.

Sweet basil originated from Asia, and it is frequently used in Italian, Greek and French delicacies. To grow sweet basil, you need to follow few of these guidelines.

Firstly, you would be required to prepare the bed for the sweet basil. The perfect soil for bed would be warm ranging from 75 to 90 degree Fahrenheit. The bed also needs to be moistened. To achieve this, water the bed well before sowing the seed. The bed should be prepared well so that the soil is well aerated. Remove all kinds of weeds from the soil and add good quantity of compost. Sweet basil can grow well in a place where it can at least three to four hours of sunlight in warmer climates and at least six to eight hours of sunlight where the climate is cooler.

Once you have ensured that frost season has passed, you can sow the sweet basil seeds in the bed prepared by you. Sprinkle the seeds lightly and cover these seeds with very little amount of soil, about a 1/4 inch. The seeds should be pressed firmly, so that they are in contact with the soil and can germinate quickly. Purchase good quality of seedlings from the nursery you will find ample of seedlings during spring and mid-summer.
