Asparagus Growing Conditions

The first thing to be careful about growing an asparagus yourself is that it needs quite a lot of sunlight. Ensure this when you plan to grow them in your nursery. Asparagus plants last as long as few trees. Hence, they should be initially planted in places where there is not too much of shade. An asparagus plant generally needs around eight hours of sunlight.
Asparagus should be planted during the early spring especially during April and May. During this time the soil reaches a temperature of nearly 50 degrees Fahrenheit which is quite appropriate for them. If you wish to have the best crop, you can choose to avail a year old crown instead of a fresh seed.
The next big thing to look for is a well drained soil that has enough nutrients and possesses a neutral pH. When you plant a crown, they prefer deep soil so as to avoid water logging. A poor soil can be replenished with composite and organic matter. You may get the soil tested to ascertain which essential nutrient is deficient and accordingly decide on the type of fertilizer. But this has to be done before planting the seed or crown. If you have not done this, you may also add 10-10-10 or 10-20-10 fertilizer at the rate of 2.5 pounds per one hundred feet, and it should be put quite deep inside the soil.
