Growing Poppy Seeds

Poppy seeds are small wheatish colored seeds that are used for culinary purposes and also extracting oil. One of the varieties of poppy also produces opium. Also, poppies are very easy plants to grow from the seeds and they give out beautiful colorful flowers.

Poppy flowers are very pretty and they are small and round in shape. They have exactly four petals and they beautifully light up the garden like the stars in the sky. Also, once you start growing poppy in your garden, the plants will start reseeding themselves again very easily. Poppy needs full sunlight or partial sunlight to grow; the soil should be loose and with minimum fertilizer. It needs a lot so sunshine and regular watering.

Before sowing the poppy seeds prepare the bed by loosely packing the soil. The air should be able to go in the soil easily and that is how you should judge the quality of the soil. The best time to sow poppy seeds is during spring or in the fall. Also, remove all the weeds from the soil before sowing the seeds. Poppy seeds are very small so you need to put in two or three of them together. Do not cover the seeds with soil because the seeds need light to germinate. This is one of the important things that you need to remember while sowing poppy seeds. The bed should be kept moist and not soggy. That is you should avoid excess watering in the initial days.

It takes about two weeks time for poppy seeds to germinate if the conditions are perfect. Plant the poppy seeds 6 to 8 inches apart. The average poppy plant grows up to 6 to 12 inches.
