Can You Eat Bay Leaves ?

Bay leaf is an herb that is used in cooking by various cultures. It belongs to the laurel family and is grown extensively across America and Europe. It is used to garnish soups, meat dishes, stews and also Mediterranean way of making rice. Even Indians use it to garnish rice in a special preparation known as Biryani.

However, when most people cook food items along with Bay leaf, they put it in the oil to season it and then add the dish whatever it is that they are making. Even while eating people usually leave out the bay leaves and only have the food enriched in its flavor. Nobody eats the Bay leaves. Usually when we add other spices or herbs like cinnamon or cloves, some people eat it. Also, you can powder these spices and add it to the food. Bay leaf cannot be added even in a dried and powdered form.

Also, Bay leaf has very sharp edges and when a person eats them it may cut their mouth. It can be extremely difficult to chew the Bay leaf as it has a leathery texture. Not only is it difficult to chew but also very difficult to digest. It cannot be ground to tiny bits by chewing. Once the Bay leaf is cooked with the food, it loses all its goodness to the food and there is no point in eating the Bay leaf. Greek mythological stories, however, describe that Delphi the Oracle used to chew Bay leaves before making predictions.
