Substitution For Allspice

Allspice is a special spice because of its aroma and sweet smelling nature. There are not really any substitutes that you can use for this particular spice. People who use allspice in their cooking would know how valuable it is for its fragrance. Allspice is actually not so easy to get and it mostly grows in tropical climates. However, people who know recipes that use allspice have realized that the dishes have great taste.

However, if you live in an area where all spice is not available, you can try for some different varieties of it. The actual allspice and its true fragrance are found in the Jamaican or the Indian variety.

There are several other spices which resemble the allspice like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger. You can use a combination of these to substitute the taste. These spices are more common than allspice and are also freely available. The Spanish, Indians, Jamaicans, people in the Middle East and the Far East use allspice in their cooking. There are several recipes from these cuisines if you would like to experiment. Allspice happens to be the only spice that is grown extensively in the west.

It is an evergreen tree and it produces berries through out the year. According to the history of this spice, it is believed that it was also used by the Mayans. For the west, it is not something new and it has always been used in various culinary preparations. It is best not to use any substitute for allspice. Rather, use the spice itself, so that you get an enriched and unique flavor from your food.
