Many people will not know what a rambutan is. It is a fruit that looks very similar to the lychee. It is a small fruit, which has characteristic spikes on its pink colored skin. These spikes are not hard, but soft to touch. You can even get rambutans that are yellow or orange in color. The fruit is used very often in Asian cooking and has a flavor that is quite similar to grapes. A serving consisting of 100 gm of rambutan will have around 84 calories. If a person consumes, 2,000 calories a day, he/she will be getting 4.2 percent of their calorie needs from 100 gm of the fruit. However, remember, a person's calorie needs are based on their weight, height, lifestyle, age and sex.

Rambutan is low in fat content, having just 0.1 gm of fat in each 100 gm serving. Along with the fat, the fruit also has some protein, around 0.7 to 0.9 gm. However, majority of the calories that the fruit gets is from the presence of carbohydrates. A serving of 100 gm of the fruit contain nearly 14 to 14.5 gm of carbohydrates.

Eating rambutan is a healthy diet option. It is rich in Vitamin C. If you consume 100 gm of the fruit, you will be getting around forty percent of your daily recommended dose of the vitamin. Remember, the body is unable to store Vitamin C and hence, we have to consume it every day in order to get the daily dosage. Besides Vitamin C, rambutan contains Vitamin B3, which is also called niacin.

Rambutan is also rich in iron. You will get around 13.8 percent of your daily iron need by eating this fruit. This will ensure that you never turn anemic. Anemia is a major problem in today's life, as most people have poor eating habits. Eating rambutan regularly can alleviate the symptoms of anemia, such as tiredness and dizziness. In addition, you will also be giving your body the much needed phosphorus, which is used to filter waste materials in the kidneys. Phosphorus also plays an important role in growth and repair of tissues.

Besides being a healthy and nutritious fruit, rambutan also has several medicinal properties.
