The exotic fruit rambutan has high content of sugar, but it still does not have high calories. Each fruit has around 60 calories. However, the fruit is also full of Vitamin C, iron, Vitamin A and potassium. In addition, it contains some amount of magnesium, zinc, calcium, fiber, niacin and protein. So, there are several health benefits of rambutan and you cannot go wrong if you eat this fruit regularly, or at least when it is in season.

The fruit is grown widely in Malaysia and Indonesia, where it is an important ingredient in traditional medicines. It is used to treat diabetes, elevated blood pressure and several other health conditions. Besides the Vitamin C, which is an antioxidant, researchers associated with the Chiang Mai University located in Thailand have found that the entire fruit, including the skin, seeds and pulp, contains flavonoids, which are plant-based antioxidants. These antioxidants not only aid in lowering high cholesterol levels but are anti-carcinogenic and anti inflammatory.

The skin of the fruit contains a compound known as gallic acid. This acid helps to destroy free radicals in the cells and prevents the body from oxidative damage. In addition, gallic acid is a potent anti-carcinogenic. The belief that the antioxidants present in the skin is so useful, that you can get packed rambutan peel extract as a supplement in many health stores.

Some of the nutrients present in rambutan include Vitamin C, Vitamin A, potassium, manganese, zinc, magnesium, calcium, fiber, phosphorus, and protein. The content of Vitamin C in the fruit is extremely high and hence, it is an ideal source of this vitamin. Vitamin C not only destroys free radicals in the body, it also is important for proper absorption of copper and iron which are used for the production of blood cells.

Another scientific study in Malaysia proved that rambutan has antiseptic properties and is a fruit that helps in fighting infections and harmful bacteria present in the body.

So, now that you know the health benefits of rambutan, you should not avoid eating this fruit. Instead, when ever the opportunity arises, buy and consume this fruit. You can only benefit from eating it.
