Which State Grows The Most Peaches ?
Peaches and plums are sweet pulpy fruits which people enjoy eating for the taste. The peach trees are grown mostly in the state of California. In all, there are more than 1,100 growers of these trees in the central region of San Joaquin Valley. These growers make up for almost sixty percent of the total harvest of peaches in the whole of the US. A large portion of the harvesting is done in the orchards near Reedley which lies south of the city, Fresno. Almost ninety percent of the total harvest of fresh peaches is grown in the counties of Kern, Fresno and Tulare. |
After California, South Carolina which is ranked second and Georgia ranked third in the business of peach production at 15 percent and 13 percent respectively.
The peach trees thrive well in mild climate. Hot summer season is good for them, while cold winter season can kill them. If the winters prolong, the blossoms can get killed thus affecting the harvest of that year. Temperature less than 25 degrees Fahrenheit is not suitable for the growth of these trees.
The soil should be well drained and contain nutrients like potassium, nitrogen and phosphorous for a good growth. If the nutrient level is insufficient, the grower should add suitable fertilizers.
The best time to plant a tree is spring since the sapling will have ample time till the onset of winters to grow big enough. The land should be well lit and the trees should be spaced in order to cater for their branches spreading out. They should not be planted close to walls. Pruning young trees is an essential activity for ensuring that the trees bears peaches of good quality in the future. The area surrounding the plantation should be weeded regularly for healthy growth.
Watering should be done bearing in mind the type of soil and weather. Loose and sandy soil will require more water than clay- like soil. Watering should be done once or twice in a week. If the climate is dry, they can be watered more or if the climate is humid, they can be watered lesser than the average.
Fruits should be borne only from the 3rd year. The buds should be nipped before that in order to ensure that the tree grows stronger and larger before bearing fruits. Once the budding commences, inspect and nip the buds of small size for ensuring good taste in the peaches harvested. Check the peaches for ripeness before harvesting. They should feel firm but give in slightly when pressed with the thumb.

Depending on the place they are grown and the variety of the peach, the time to harvest peaches can differ. Mostly they ripen mid-summer to late-summer. In the orchards located in southern US, they ripen in June and July while in the Northern parts they ripen in July and August. Peaches stop ripening once they are picked.
