History Of Papaya

Papaya is known to be a native of South America and Central America. References to it have been made a long time back by the Latin American Indians.

Also, the papaya was taken to several other countries by the Spanish and the Portuguese explorers. Papaya was called as the fruit of the angles by Christopher Columbus. In the 19th century, papaya was brought to the United States and cultivated in Hawaii. However, today, the United States, Puerto Rico and Hawaii are the largest producers of papaya, and they even export it.

Papaya is a fairly large fruit and it is bright yellow or orange in color. In the historic times, it was considered as an exotic fruit because of its buttery taste and appearance.

It is available in the markets throughout the year. Papaya is actually an herb, and the papaya fruit is shaped like a pear. It is green when raw, and yellow when completely ripe. The papaya tree grows as tall as twenty feet, and the fruits are found on top of the plant, just under the leaves. Usually it is common to find three to five papayas hanging on one stem of the tree. The leaves are huge and scanty. The entire trunk of the papaya tree has no leaves, and they grow only on the top like a crown

Papaya is known for its digestive capabilities and has a special enzyme that speeds up digestion. Also, papaya is an effective medicine for stomach ache. The flesh of the papaya is rich in several nutrients and vitamins.
