Several people love the taste of durian in spite of its pungent odor. This is primarily because of the cheesy taste that the fruit has to offer.Durian was first found in Southeast Asian countries. In fact, these people have known it since prehistoric times. The Western world knows the fruit just for the last 600 years. In some of the countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Cambodia and even in New Zealand, the fruit has existed for long. So, the origins of the fruit can be traced to these parts clearly.
It was the Portuguese who first discovered the fruit and its taste, and introduced it to their side of the world. Durian is a fruit that is similar to the horse chestnut, but the latter does not have much odor. Villages of Southeast Asia have been cultivating durian for several centuries now.
A British botanist did study the migration of durian to several countries. However, there are no clear indications how the cultivation began in other countries of the world.
In the modern 19th and 20th century, the demand for durian from countries like Australia, America and England has increased to a great extent. So, the cultivation of this fruit has also increased. Today, Indonesia is the largest exporter of Durian to the United States. There is a significant demand for the fruit even in the Southeast Asian region.
