Care Of Coconut Plant

One of the tallest varieties of palm trees is the coconut tree. This tree of the tropical and sub-tropical realm attains a height of about 70 to 100 feet.

The tree is often referred to as the tree of a thousand uses as almost all parts of the plant are beneficial to the human race in one form or the other. The number of nuts produced by a tree varies in accordance to the care taken by the planter. A well kept tree can produce 75 to 200 nuts in a year. The tree grows best in outdoor locations with temperatures higher than 30 degrees. The plant needs good amount of sunlight. The tree requires well drained sandy soil particularly enriched with lime and potash.

Care needs to be taken while watering the plant at a younger stage. The root of the plant takes time to firmly affix itself to the compost, and therefore excessive watering at this stage may prove to be harmful for the growth of the plant. An indoor plant needs to be watered two or three times in a week; whereas a coconut tree in an outdoor location needs watering only if there is scanty rainfall in the region.

The leaves of the coconut tree require regular pruning for the growth of new leaves. However, this may not be possible in the case of extremely tall outdoor trees. The leaves also tend to accumulate dust, which needs to be wiped off or showered in cases of indoor plants; while rain does the needful for those growing out in the open. During summer, spring and autumn seasons, the coconut tree may require fertilizers. These fertilizers should be blended into the soil with the hands to a depth of one inch, and the soil should then be watered well.

In order to assist the coconut tree in absorbing increased amount of nutrients from the soil, the roots of the plant can be setup with mycorrhizal fungi. This is a coarse soil chemical addition that is easily available in nurseries.
