The foremost requirement for cultivating banana tree is understanding the various temperature requirements of the tree. The trees grow best at a temperature ranging from 79 to 82 degree Fahrenheit. The fruit production is optimum at a temperature between 84 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. The banana tree stops growing when the temperature becomes around 50 degree Fahrenheit. And lastly, at a temperature of 28 degree Fahrenheit the tree cannot survive anymore.
Having understood the temperature requirements, the next thing to be done is to winterize the tree trunk. For this, you need to cut off the leaves and put a plastic mesh all around the banana tree trunk. About fifteen inch of radius all around the trunk should be left. The spaces must then be filled with dried leaves and the mesh can be capped with a plastic sheet. Covering the trunk in this way helps in providing insulation to the tree from extreme winters.
Once the tree trunk has been taken care of in this way, the next thing to protect is the underground bulb from frost. When it is not possible to insulate the entire banana tree from extreme winters, protecting the bulb and the roots will help in growing another plant if the tissues are all alive. Ensure that the tree is saved from winter wind. Wind speed of forty miles per hour is harmful for the banana tree. To protect the tree from wind damage, one can put a barrier made up of a plastic net.
