There are the upright ones which make great cut flowers to the more compact, multi-flowered border plants. You can have large or small zinnias, single or double, and in any color under the sun but blue.Annuals that can be grown by both beginners and experts, zinnias come in a large number of varieties that you can choose from. A popular zinnia type is the 'Cut and Come Again', which is a double-flowered zinnia that blooms the more you cut it. This variety of zinnia usually grows anywhere between 2 to 3 feet in height.
Another popular type of zinnia is the 'Profusion Series'. These plants have the most remarkable resistance to all types of diseases, and are a gardener’s delight, thanks to their care free nature. In fact, they are so hassle-free that you do not even have to deadhead these plants! This particular variety grows flowers which are 2 to 3 inches across, and the plants usually grow between 12 to 18 inches in height. Flowers belonging to this kind come in orange, white, yellow and cherry colors.
The Thumbelina is a dome-shaped, compact plant that starts bloom just when it is about 3 inches tall. These plants usually grow up to 6-inch plants and look great in low flower beds, edging and pots.
A new kind of zinnia that comes with richly colored flowers that last long is the Zowie Hybrid. The blooms have center cones surrounded by yellow, rich scarlet and rose colored petals.
Finally there is the Envy, which comes with striking green flowers that look good both in the garden as well as in the vase.
