Planting Tips For Tulips

Tulips are beautiful, velvety flowers that can make your backyard look like a dream.

Planting tulips is fairly easy and if you follow a few simple steps, then you will surely be rewarded with lovely, colorful blooms. The very first step towards successful planting of tulips is preparing the soil in the planting area. Choose a sunny area in your garden and make sure it also has excellent drainage. Now loosen the soil in that area by digging about a foot deep.

Next, add some compost or dried manure to the soil, and mix everything together just like cake batter, i.e., till it is smooth. Our soil is now ready for planting. So, now it is time to dig up the planting holes.

You must remember to dig holes that are 3 times deeper than the height of the tulip bulb. If the tulip bulb is 2 1/2 inches tall, then you must dig a hole that is 8 inches deep. That way there will be 5 inches of soil above the bulb. The rule is to always ensure that there is twice as much soil over the tip of the bulb, as compared to its height. Also, you must remember to set the bulb in such a manner that its pointed side is facing up. They will flower even if you forget to do this and place a few upside down, but it will take them longer. Also, those bulbs may not be able to grow as tall as the other bulbs. Finally, water well and cover up the area with mulch.
