Life Cycle Of A Tulip

Tulips are beautiful and perfect, due to which they were considered the flowers of God by the Turks.

Though said to be a native of Holland, these flowers are actually from Central and Western Asia. It is believed that nomadic tribes brought tulips to Turkey, and it was the Turks who made tulips popular as a spring flower. The tulip is a cup-shaped, bright flower with a green stem, and it belongs to the family of liliaceous plants. Since the tulip is a native of Central and West Asia, it is important that you learn about the climate of their homeland. The countries in these regions go through dry and hot summers, followed by extremely cold winters. Thus, plants from these areas like tulips have specific survival methods. They remain dormant through the winter months, and bloom in spring and summer. Tulips have underground storage organs named bulbs, which help them survive the harsh and long cold spells.

The life cycle of a tulip is quite interesting. The bulbs of tulips are planted between the middle of September till the middle of November. Since the soil remains moist during this period, it helps the bulbs grow under the ground. Then the roots start growing from these bulbs, forming a healthy root system. By the end of winter, healthy green shoots start appearing from the bulbs of the tulips. The flowers begin blooming by early or mid April, and continue to do so till mid May. In the life cycle of tulips, foliage plays an important role. The process of photosynthesis depends on the leaves and hence, they should never be cut.
