Growing tulips in containers is very simple. A bunch of dormant tulip bulbs, colorful decorative flowerpots and some space in your refrigerator -- that is all you need to grow tulips during any season and in any corner of the world!
Firstly, choose the healthiest bulbs possible, which are large and without bruises or softness. Next, prepare the soil. Since you are growing tulips forcibly, you need to make sure that the soil drains well and is able to keep the rot off. You will also need to ensure the right balance of fertilization, drainage and moisture. This you can take care of by using this popular recipe - one part potting soil, one part sand and one part fertilizer or compost. This will let the moisture nurture the bulb without damaging it.
Next, make sure the pot you use can hold moisture well, as the bulb should not become too dry. Select a pot that is between 8 to 10 inches in diameter, and minimum 8 inches tall. Plant the bulbs with the roots facing down, with the temperature close to 35 degrees Fahrenheit for the initial 3 to 5 weeks, and 48 degrees Fahrenheit in the last few weeks.
The chilled bulbs will develop a root system. Then put the pots in a space with a temperature of 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit and plenty of natural light. When the shoots are about 2 inches in height, transfer them to direct sunlight.
