Nutritional Value Of Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds are black or grayish-green in color, and are known for their high nutritional value. The edible part which comes out when the seed is de-hulled is called sunflower kernel.

You can buy sunflower seeds either shelled or unshelled.Sunflower seeds come with a large number of health benefits and are helpful in treating diseases like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and asthma, lowering the risk of colon cancer and reducing blood pressure. Sunflower seeds and oil contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, both known for keeping your heart healthy.

These seeds are also a rich source of protein, necessary for building, maintaining and repairing body tissues. Another important health benefit of sunflower seeds is that they are the best whole food source of Vitamin E. Folate, which is a B vitamin, is necessary to create new body cells. When paired with Vitamin B-12, Folate also helps to form hemoglobin in red blood cells, which in turn lets these cells carry adequate amounts of oxygen. Folate also does something else. It helps in the removal of homocysteine, which is an amino acid that is known to trigger off heart diseases. A study conducted by Harvard University as shown that higher intake of folate can be co-related to lower risk of heart disease. Sunflower seeds also provide the human body with other essentials like zinc, iron and fiber. Zinc is what keeps your immune system going and keeps your body healthy and safe from infections. Iron carries oxygen from the lungs to every part of your body, while fiber helps manage blood glucose, prevents constipation and lowers blood cholesterol.
