This stunning flower is the national flower of Russia, and it is said the Great Russian ruler Peter was so enamored by the sunflower when he first saw it in Holland that he took sunflower seeds back to Russia.

The Aztecs worshipped sunflower images made of gold in their temples and even crowned their princesses with these sunny yellow flowers.

Kansas City is fondly called 'The Sunflower State'; and the tallest sunflower was grown by M. Heijmf in the Netherlands in 1986. A sunflower plant is able to grow up to 18 feet high, while a sunflower grows in 90 to 100 days. Growing sunflowers is also a surefire way to attract many kinds of birds to your yard.

There are more than sixty different varieties of sunflowers which can be found all over the world, the most common of these being the bright yellow ones, with dark brown, seed-filled centers. The head of a sunflower has one to two thousand individual flowers joined to a base. The big petals which you see around the edge of a sunflower are actually individual ray flowers.
