If you have not heard the term before, you may be wondering what is a cabbage rose. This is a type of rose that is known for its distinctive bloom. The flower has so many petals that it gives the bloom an appearance of a cabbage. The blooms are quite fragrant and look very pretty. You can easily find cabbage roses in nurseries and florists, and they are pretty easy to grow. You can propagate a cabbage rose with the help of a cutting.
The cabbage rose can be white, pink, red or variegated. The scientific name of the cabbage rose is Rosa centifola, but it is not necessary that the bloom will have a hundred petals. It just means that the bloom has multiple petals, which are ruffled. (See Reference 1)
The cabbage rose plant has a gray green foliage and the leaves are simple compound leaves. If the cabbage rose plant is not pruned, it can grow quite big in size, and many appear like a tree. However, this sized plant will require adequate support. Alternatively, you can prune the branches and make the plant appear like a bush. Nonetheless, you would still have to provide some type of support for the bush to stand and grow. The bloom is enclosed inside a bud that may feel a little mossy when you touch it, but the cabbage rose flourishes in full sunlight unlike moss. However, due to the moss-like feeling of the bud, at times, the cabbage rose is also known as moss rose. (See Reference 1)
The more you prune the cabbage rose plant during the dormant period, the more roses it will produce. Also, ensure that you fertilize the plant during spring to stimulate growth and bloom production. (See Reference 1)
The cabbage rose is at times referred to as Provence rose or rose de mai. This species of rose was developed by rose breeders from The Netherlands some time in the 1600s by cross breeding a variety of roses. This rose flourish in hardy zone 4 through 9. (See Reference 1) |
